Reflection on the project

I think my poster has a good design because there is a certain flow to it. My eye starts at the top and sort of moves in a triangular movement, which I have not seen really in other posters before. There are essentially two groupings, the three grouped in the left bottom corner and then the top three that are in a far apart triangle, which includes the photograph of the nail clippers. I think the use of negative space contributes to the design of the poster. There is not too little or too much negative space. The way that the clippers are at angles makes the poster have a good design because the clippers aren't in their original horizontal or vertical position. I am pleased at the way that my final poster turned out. I didn't think I would change the whole design from the preliminary poster, but I did and it looks a lot better.

Reading 1 response

In the reading 1 assignment, the article talks about what design is. It says that there are many people that know about design, but have little agreement exists about exactly what is understood by the term design. Design is one of the basic characteristics of what it is to be human, and an essential determinant of the quality of human life. Design affects people every day in every detail of every aspect of what we do. The article also says that there are very few aspects that are not capable of improvement in some significant way. The word design itself has so many levels of meaning that it is a source of confusion. Then the article goes on to tell about the design on different levels, on how when talking about design, one usually leads into one of two directions. First, defining generic patterns and second tracing these patterns through history to understand how and why the present confusion exists. It says that most of the confusion in understanding design stems from the pattern of historical evolution.

Objectified

I thought the movie "Objectified" was pretty interesting, although it did start off kind of slow. In the movie, it said just about everything we use has been designed, even if we don't think so, like the objects we use everyday. Also, how they mentioned that every object tells a story. I thought that was interesting because I have never thought about that. From the movie I learned that there are 3 phases of design, 1. look at the form, 2. symbolism and content, and 3. contextual sense.
